Georgie A (Vartorella) Ward

October 9, 1943 ~ July 12, 2019 (age 75)
Georgie (Vartorella) Ward, 75, of Berlin Heights, passed away at home early Friday morning, on July 12, 2019, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Thomas, and her four daughters: Christine (David) Stelzer of Huron, Karen (David) Zwemer of Vero Beach, FL, Kathy (Mike) Gastier of Milan, and Connie Ward of Berlin Heights. Her eight grandchildren include Rachel (Alex) Wolfram, Daniel (Sarah) Stelzer, and Nicholas Stelzer; Eric and Andrew Zwemer, Zoe (Luke) McCoy, Elise and Ben Gastier. She also has a great-granddaughter, Ada McCoy. She was preceded in death by her parents Dominic and Mary Vartorella.

Georgie was born in Norwalk, Ohio on October 9, 1943. She graduated from Berlin Heights High School and Mary Manse College in Toledo where she earned her teaching degree. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University. Her teaching career began in Huron at St. Peter School, and she retired from Berlin-Milan Middle School after thirty years of service.

Georgie, a lifetime resident of Berlin Heights, was a member of the Echoes, Alumni Association, Historical Society, Garden Club, and Harvest Festival Committee. Her educational affiliations included Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Erie County Retired Teachers Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society.

Other activities she enjoyed included being a Girl Scout Leader, coaching volleyball and softball, and attending the events of the Black Swamp Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society. She is remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, friend, and teacher who gave selflessly.

Visiting hours will be Monday, July 15th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Morman-Hinman-Tanner Funeral Home, 38 South Street, Berlin Heights. Services will be Tuesday, July 16th at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplin Melvin Sayler officiating. Burial will be at Peaks Cemetery in Berlin Township.
