Basil Virland Gillespie

June 17, 1941 — April 2, 2022

Basil Virland Gillespie, 81, went home to be with The Lord on Saturday, April 2, 2022. He passed peacefully, with family by his side.

Basil was born on June 17, 1941 to Emma and Cecil Gillespie at their home in Meadow Bluff, WV. He spent most of his life residing in Wakeman, OH where he worked as a Committeeman at the Lorain Ford Plant. Together, he and his loving late wife Drema raised three beautiful, kind, compassionate daughters until God called Drema home.

For the last 16 years of his life, Basil and his beloved companion, Elsie, resided among family in Wakeman, and spent their winters volunteering at the Florida State Parks, traveling and enjoying life!

If you ever had the privilege of knowing Basil, then you certainly will always remember his big smile, infectious laugh, and warm embrace. Hard-working, loving, generous, and funny are just a handful of the words that only begin to describe the man he was. The very best one, though, would be FAMILY. Family meant everything to Basil, and the love he had for his is immeasurable.

Basil is proceeded in death by his parents, Emma and Cecil Gillespie, brothers Cecil Jr., Russell, Delbert, John, and Cledith. In addition, he follows into Heaven his late wife Drema Gillespie and grandson Nathan Manwaring.

He leaves behind his loving life companion, Elsie Wechter; sisters Doralea (Isaac) Houchins, Ethel Heaster; children, Patty (Pat) Martz, Gloria (Jack) Nissen, Donna (Patrick) Manwaring; grandchildren, Shawn Martz, Matthew (Kristen) Martineau, Erik (Lynn) Nissen, Zachary (Merissa) Nissen, Shane (Lexy) Martz, Lindsey Manwaring; bonus granddaughter (by way of Elsie), Haley West; 7 great-grandchildren; and countless extended family members. What a legacy he leaves!

Friends and family may call on Saturday, April 9th from 10:00 AM until time of services at 1:00 PM at Morman Funeral Home, 16 Cooper Street, Wakeman. Burial will follow at Wakeman Cemetery. Reverand Junior Kerns will be presiding.

A celebration of life luncheon will immediately follow at St. Mary's in Wakeman.

Country roads, bring him home.
Heavy-hearted, we lay him to rest.
Our loss down here is Heaven's gain,
The Lord's called Home His very best.
That HEARTful smile, his joyful laugh,
And soul-encompassing hugs.
Wisdom earned through a life well-lived,
A legacy stitched with love.
With aching hearts, we face goodbye,
It hurts on this side of Heaven.
But today, he revels in the presence of God,
No sadness or illness can touch him.
Thank you, Lord, for what he has meant,
To everyone, he's held so dear.
Give him a good seat up there in Heaven,
To keep watch of us all still down here.
