Bernadine Palkovic

February 9, 1921 — July 12, 2015

Bernadine (Thomas) Palkovic of Berlin Heights, OH, passed quietly in the early hours of July 12, 2015 surrounded by friends and family. Bernadine was born at home - the same home where her father had been born - spending the majority of her childhood there in Hartland Township. Bernadine graduated from New London High School in 1938, a member of National Honor Society and went on to Oberlin Business School. A proud mother of four talented daughters, she enjoyed accompanying them on piano as they sang and played a wide variety of instruments. She was a long-time supporter of PBS, the arts and education. An avid reader, who appreciated a variety of "good stories" and news articles. She especially enjoyed reading the accolades earned by family members. She is survived by her youngest sister Mary Lou Cedarland. Daughters Louanne Palkovic, Martha (Tom) Hoffman, Kathryn (Hal) Horn and Janet Palkovic (DJ Livingston). Grandchildren: Joseph (Joanne) Hoffman, Steven (Lisa) Hoffman, Greg (Lori) Coats, Krista (NEE Horn)(Jim) Hatmaker, Deborah (NEE Horn) (Ron) Cox, Chase Horn (Jeremy Taylor), Shaun Randolph and Heather (NEE Randolph)(Jason) Schloesser. Her extended family included 11 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bernice O. & Jennie (NEE Wilson) Thomas; husband, George Palkovic; sister, Kay Trail-Hill; and brother, Herman "Bob" Thomas. Her community involvement was extensive. Bernadine was involved in leadership positions and members of the following: PTA, Band Boosters, Conservation Club, Lakeview Methodist Church, Berlin Heights Historical Society, as well as a Girl Scout Leader. Bernadine also worked for many years in various positions including that of a basket weaver for the Berlin Heights Box Shop. She was one of the founding members of the community festivals which began in Berlin Heights in 1942. Her legacy continues with her daughters' participation in various roles as performers and planning committee members for the Basket Festival. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family can be given to the 2015 Basket Festival Queen as scholarship. The family would like to thank neighbors, William (Chip) Gammie and family for looking after her and her home on Mason road, and the delicious fruit from their orchard over the years. Special thanks also to Mike Taylor for his priceless gift of friendship and support for the family. Friends and family can visit Morman-Hinman-Tanner Funeral Home in Berlin Heights, Ohio for visitation, Tuesday, July 14 from 3-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 15 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home followed by graveside services at Peak's Cemetery on Darrow Rd. in Berlin Township. The family will also have a gathering after the graveside services at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3747 Liberty Ave. Vermilion Ohio.
