Donald Frank Dawkins

May 15, 1929 ~ December 10, 2021 (age 92)

Obituary

Donald Frank Dawkins, 92, of Berlin Heights, OH passed away December 10, 2021. He was born May 15, 1929 in Harpenden, England and came to the United States in 1954 to work as a tool and die maker for GM Mansfield. He then transferred to GM in Elyria. Donald enjoyed racing motorcycles in England. He made a lot of friends while riding motorcycles in the United States. He raced in California, and he even had his own airplane. He became a US citizen, and joined the US Coast Guard Auxiliary while living in Florida. He enjoyed being a crew member on safety patrols. When he was in Ohio for the summer, he would go on patrol with the Lorain Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also a Marine Visitor and vessel examiner. Don was a member of VFW, Amvets, and the American Legion. He loved telling stories of growing up in England during World War II, his motorcycling adventures, and just life in general. He enjoyed gardening, and had his own trucking company hauling stone and topsoil.

One thing we can attest to is that Don could tell a story. One word would trigger a memory and he would tell you the name of a person, who was there with them, what day of the week, the time, and what was done. He loved telling stories from his army days, his travels, and anything else. He was a reader of National Geographic. the Smithsonian, Motorcycle Classics, and all the magazines one of his friends dropped off. If anyone wants some of these magazines, Serena says she probably has 33 years of them!

He was a gentle man, kind, and enjoyed people and animals. This was proven by how highly he was thought of. Don was a simple man who was happy with little. He was careful with his money but would give you the shirt off his back or the money out of his pocket. But he sure wouldn't spend money on himself, except for all the equipment he had to have! Yes, he was someone everyone will miss.

When Don married Serena 33 years ago, he not only got a wife, but a ready-made family. He loved all of the grown children: Terry, Tracie, Kelly, and Tammy.

Don is survived by his wife, Serena (Molnar) Dawkins; son, Kelly (Kim); daughters, Tracie and Terry; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sister, Betty Dawkins; and nephew, Nigel Goldsmith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Violet Dawkins; daughter, Tammy Neal; a nephew, Ian Goldsmith; and a grandson, Jason Seth; and a sister, Marjorie Goldsmith.
